Rules of the Game
Updated February 28, 2026
RULES OF THE GAME:
1. Team members sit together at a table and may discuss among themselves the answers to the questions, but NO OUTSIDE SOURCES ARE ALLOWED. If you cheat at SGMS Sports Trivia, you will go to hell. It’s really that simple.
2. There will be 6 rounds of questions with varying point totals of between 30 and 34 points. Each answer will be worth one point. A perfect score in this year’s contest is 190 points.
3. Partial credit will be given for questions with multi-part answers. For example, if your team correctly answers one part of a “three-part” question, you will be awarded one point.
4. Questions will be read or played only once, and will also be PROJECTED. Teams are encouraged to write down the questions as they are read for future reference.
5. There will be approximately 20 seconds between questions (i.e., after the reading of a question there will be a 20 second pause before the first reading of the next question).
6. At the end of each round, there will be an additional 90 seconds for team captains to deliver answer sheets for the round to the nearest scorekeeper’s table. Any answer sheets not received within 90 seconds after the second reading of the last question of the round may be disregarded and the team may receive zero points for that round.
7. Format and timing of questions may be adjusted in certain rounds. Please pay attention to the MC for specific instructions.
8. After all answer sheets are turned in, but before the next round begins, the correct answers to the questions from the previous round will be read aloud.
9. After all six rounds are complete, the team with the most points is the winner.
10. Prizes will be awarded based on total points, and to the “Regional Bracket Champions.” Please pay attention to the MC for details, including special bonus round prizes.
11. In the event of a tie for first place based on overall points, there will be one additional question asked, and the team “closest to the pin” will be declared the winner. In the event of all other ties, the following tie-breakers will be applied: (a) average score per round[1]; (b) combined points in the 3rd and 5th rounds; (c) points in the 6th round; (d) coin toss; (e) team that has LEAST amount of hair (on team members’ heads). Ties in head-to-head bracket match-ups will be broken by a “closest to the pin” question asked immediately before the first round.
12. Decisions of the referees are FINAL. There will be no appeals, challenges, replays or reviews.
Please remember that the Sports Trivia Night is a fundraiser for the charitable activities of the St. Giles Men’s Society. Like other SGMS events, the primary purpose of this event is fellowship. This is NOT a Retreads playoff game, so please DO NOT take the event too seriously. There is no money or extravagant prizes to be won – just beautiful medals, stylish gear, and bragging rights. We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of our questions and answers and to have a fair balance of questions, across all “sports,” [2] and sports trivia skill levels.
Thank you for participating and we hope you have a great time!

[2] Over the vigorous objection of most Committee Members, Soccer, Olympics, Horse Racing, Cycling and other recreational activities are considered sports for purposes of this event.
